The Woman Behind The Title

We all collect titles throughout our lives. Some we earn, some are lovingly given to us, and some arrive so quietly that before we realise it, they have become part of who the world believes us to be.

I have been reflecting on the many titles that have woven themselves into the tapestry of my life. Daughter, Friend, Wife, Business owner, Sister. Each has shaped me in some way. Each has left its mark.

Yet there is one title that has occupied my thoughts more than any other. One simple word. One beautiful word. One title so powerful that once it was given to me, the world seemed to see me differently.

MUM.

It is a title almost every one of us recognises, whether we carry it ourselves or have been loved by someone who did.

Yet I wonder ...

Do we ever really see the woman beneath it?

Not the Mother. The woman.

The one who existed long before the title ever arrived.

Who was she in the silence, when no one noticed she was quiet? That is the question I keep coming back to. Before she was someone's Mother, before her name was replaced by "Mum." Before the responsibilities, the expectations, and the invisible weight that came with loving another human being more than herself.

Who was she?

She was a girl. Just a girl trying to find her place in the world. She laughed without wondering who was watching. She made mistakes without fearing she was setting an example. She embraced life because she wasn't afraid to explore. Her responsibilities belonged only to her, and with that came a freedom she never thought to appreciate.

She carried dreams that belonged only to her. Dreams she never abandoned. She simply folded them carefully away while somebody else learned to dream.

Places she longed to see. Experiences she couldn't wait to have. Perhaps a career. Perhaps a home filled with laughter. Perhaps a life that looked nothing like the one she would eventually live.

She couldn't possibly have imagined that one small word would one day become the title by which the world would know her. Nor could she have understood that love would take so much of her. Not because anyone demanded it, but because that is what love does. It changes us quietly. One ordinary day at a time. Then something remarkable happens.

The girl didn't disappear. The world simply stopped looking for her. They saw the title. MUM. A title that somehow came with the expectation that she instinctively knew what to do. That she would always have answers. That she would somehow become more patient, more selfless, more understanding, simply because another life now depended on her.

From that moment on, almost every decision she made began with someone else. Her choices didn't become less important. They simply stopped belonging to her alone. No one questioned whether she was afraid. Whether she still felt like a child herself sometimes. Whether she lay awake at night wondering if she was getting it all wrong.

The world assumed that becoming a Mother meant she had become exactly the woman she was meant to be. Yet no one is born an expert. She was learning, just as her children were. Becoming a Mother didn't stop her becoming a woman. It simply became one part of who she was.

Beneath the title, she was still learning. Still growing. Still making mistakes. Still carrying dreams that quietly whispered her name whenever life allowed a moment of silence.

No one thanked her for everything she did. Few ever stopped to ask how she was. What no one recognised was that beneath the surface, spring had already begun. The flower had never died, it had simply waited through the winter.

While her children were growing, so was she. Not in the way the world expected. Not even in a way that she could recognise. Not through promotions or accolades. Not through achievements that could be celebrated with certificates or applause.

She grew through patience. Through resilience.

Through the thousand tiny moments that no one ever noticed.

She learned that love wasn't measured by grand gestures, but by the ordinary.

By the lunch boxes packed before sunrise.

By the sleepless nights that no one remembered.

By putting someone else's dreams first, even when her own quietly waited their turn.

The world saw the Mother raising her children. What it didn't see was the woman still carrying the girl she had always been. She was still curious. Still creative. Still filled with ideas that visited her in the quiet moments. Still imagining places she hoped one day to explore. Still wondering what might become of the dreams she had folded so carefully away all those years before.

They had never left her.

She had simply asked them to wait . Not forever. Just until the season was right. Perhaps that is the greatest misunderstanding of all. Perhaps that is the woman behind the title - not someone new, but the woman who was there all along.

We imagine that women lose themselves in Motherhood. I no longer believe that. I think they become custodians of two lives. The life they are nurturing and the life within themselves that waits patiently, knowing that one day she too will have her season to bloom. Because she was never waiting to become someone new. She was simply waiting to become herself.
